Fick den frågan en gång när jag första gången sökte mig till sådana kretsar (egentligen biopunk, inte biohacking). Hade hört talas om dessa termer tidigare men aldrig funderat djupare på vad de betydde. Men nu har jag börjat läsa boken Biopunk: DIY Scientists Hack the Software of Life av författaren Marcus Wohlsen. Tycker att han ger en bra förklaring av vad biohacking är för nåt:
Hacking in this context is not a negative concept. It does not mean breaking into systems, stealing identites, or trashing privacy. It absolutely does not mean spreading viruses. Biohacking in the form promoted by DIYbio is about engineering elegant, creative, self-reliant solutions to doing biology while relying not on institutions but wits. The solution is the hack. Hacks do not require fancy lab equipment, federal funding, or peer review. They simply need as many hands, eyes, and brains focused on a problem as possible. Somewhere in that community of creative minds, the hack is waiting. Uncovering it simply requires the access to tools, the access to knowledge, and the freedom to access both…
Inte så långt ifrån fri- och öppenkällkodssamfundet för mjukvara. De här termerna har dock inte definitioner som är satta i sten. Så termer som biopunk, biohacking, DIYbiology, garagebiology osv används lite godtyckligt fortfarande. Men det är ändå bra att ha en ganska tydlig bild av vad det handlar om. Biohacking är en växande rörelse som inte kommer vara utan betydelse för samhället innan detta årtionde är slut.
